WP5: Tools Enhancing Meteorological Support for ATM Decision Making Process

Objectives

  • Use results of WP3 to develop algorithms and software to enhance the probability distribution from WP2 to fit local conditions in each airport
  • Develop algorithms and software to generate user-friendly quantities from radar measurements, e.g. visibility and snow accumulation rate for runway maintenance and de-icing
  • Use customer needs from WP4 for classification and thresholding to generate sophisticated nowcasting products from probability data
  • Plan and demonstrate product distribution to users

Description of work

Software tools developed in this work package takes into account the local conditions, like topography and precipitation type by using the methods developed in WP3. The snowfall probabilities will also be enhanced by predictability determined by WP2 in different weather situations. This information is needed when deciding when to use numerical model forecast instead of radar-based nowcast. Based on user responses gathered in WP4, the enhanced probability data is refined to several end-user products. Typically the data is simplified to few snowfall intensity classes and their probabilities as a function of time. The type of precipitation is crucial for e.g. de-icing, so the radar data can be converted to a user-dependent quantity, e.g. thickness and wetness of snow cover, to estimate the real risks. Finally, the distribution chain of products to the users will be planned for demonstrating the data flow.

Tasks

Task 5.0: Coordination of WP5
The coordination task assures the timely progress of the work and organizes workshops and phone conferences to monitor and optimize the progress among the involved teams. It is responsible for the co-operation with the project management in WP1 in the form of regular progress reporting and preparation of the deliverables according to the agreed schedule.

Task 5.1: Decision of data formats with WP2, WP3 and WP4
Data transfer between software needs a common data format. These include internal formats from WP2 and WP3 to WP5 and external formats from WP5 tools to users. Internal formats will be agreed at the beginning of this task. External formats needs input from WP4 for product dissemination, so these will be agreed before demonstration phase, task 5.4.

Task 5.2: Algorithm and software development for probability distribution enhancement
Algorithms and software developed in this task utilizes results from WP4 and WP3 and data from WP2 to enhance nowcast probability distributions

  • to fit local conditions
  • for precipitation type
  • by predictability

Task 5.3: Software development for generating several end-user products based on WP4 results
The end user specifications from WP4 are used to develop software for refining probability distributions to more user friendly output data and products. Some of  the output data formats will also be specified for demonstration in task 5.4

Task 5.4: Building a system to demonstrate distribution of products to end-users
The demonstration system how to distribute user-defined products to users effectively will be built in this task

Task 5.5: Installation, testing and performance optimization
Finalized specifications and installation of the test system based on experiences from tasks 5.3 and 5.4. This task also includes performance optimization. The results will be reported to WP4 to support the creation of the roadmap.

Task 5.6: Outline of hardware specifications
Hardware specification of the system will be proposed after tests performed in task 5.5. The results will be reported to WP4 to support the creation of the roadmap.

Task 5.7: Publications
Task 5.7 coordinates the publication of the results from tasks 5.1 to 5.6 in refereed scientific journals and during scientific conferences suitable for the addressed topics
