The Viking landers observed summertime slope winds (Hess et al, 1977), modelled by, e.g., Blumsack et al (1973), Ye et al (1990), and Savijarvi and Siili (1993). Modelling indicates circulations driven by surface thermal contrasts due to CO2 ice cover (e.g., Siili et al, 1997), surface albedo and soil thermal inertia (Siili, 1996), as well as combinations of surface variations (Siili et al, 1999); air mass modifications are also indicated (Segal et al, 1997). Observational confirmation on a number of possible mesoscale phenomena is yet missing.
